SAD Light Therapy
Why SAD Light Therapy Treatments Are Making People Happy!
Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD affects millions of people, but thanks to SAD therapy light treatments, those SAD people are taking back control of their lives. The treatment is giving new meaning to the phrase, “Let the sunshine in,” and people couldn’t be happier.
Obviously, the human body was built to work in the outdoors. The daylight was for working, while the nightlight was for, rem, sleeping. In fact, two centuries ago, the bulk of humankind worked happily outdoors in the sun and when they said that someone was sad, someone was sad, not SAD. But now, everyone is cooped up inside offices with only watering stations and fluorescent lights to keep them company. When they get out of the office, it’s almost dark.
This kind of lifestyle has proved detrimental to millions of people (especially those who live in the northern hemisphere). But now SAD therapy lights are coming to peoples’ rescue, and they’re doing the job wonderfully.
How SAD Light Therapy Work
Sunlight is a natural stimulant which tells the body to increase the production of Serotonin (the natural drug, that gives you a natural high) and decrease the production of Melatonin (the hormone responsible of making you sleepy during the evenings), which is why people are normally awake and upbeat during the days. This is the natural science behind the technology of SAD lights. You feel upbeat because the body is able to function naturally.
The body uses natural light as cues to time some of its internal functions, like sleeping and waking; your appetite and your digestion (notice that you eat a lot during breakfast and lunchtime, and a bit less during the evenings?); as well as your mood and energy levels. When your body isn’t exposed to enough sunlight, the internal clock goes haywire and you get the symptoms of SAD.
What SAD light therapy does is to expose you to light and coax your body to produce Serotonin and decrease Melatonin. This is a good treatment for those people who suffer from SAD because of the winter time. Since there is less daylight during the winter time, more people become SAD, but with the help of LED devices, you can turn the tables on the Winter Blues (which, by the way, is an endearing term meaning SAD).
The Benefits Of Light Therapy For SAD People
One of the main advantages of getting light treatment for SAD patients is that, it saves them from having to take medication. A study has shown that using light for SAD patients is as effective as giving people anti-depression medication, like Prozac. This is very good news since it saves people from having to rely on medication and keeps them from suffering any side effects.
Also, getting the light therapy won’t take too much of your time. One session typically takes around 15 minutes to a bit over one hour. During the treatment, you are exposed to light devices. You can do anything while waiting, like reading and such. After the session, you can go back to your day to day activities.
